Research + Planning: Magazine Review

The genre of this magazine is alternative, I can tell because of the way that Twenty-One Pilots are dressed and made up on the front of the cover. The colours are bright and bold making it stand out and makes it look more intense and hardcore. The fonts used are also quite bold, intense and in your face. All of the bands including in the magazine are mostly alternative or pop punk which makes this magazine fit in that catagory

On the front of the cover are Twenty-One Pilots who make Indie Rock music. On the cover they are represented quite threatening which goes along with the main masthead 'Leaders of the New World Order' so Tyler Joseph is pointing at the reader to made it more intense.

The audience of this magazine would probably be directed at teenage boys as the music is more hardcore so more boys might be into it, also I know its directed at teenages because the magazine comes with free stickers and posters which would probably be more suited for teenagers.

The shot type they have used is a low, long shot to make them seem more intimidating, the colours are very bold to make it pop and stand out.

This magazine is also alternative rock, I can tell because the main picture of Oli Sykes and he is screaming he is also very heavily tattooed and all of the bands on the cover are quite harcore and screemo.

Oli Sykes is being represented as quite hardcore and intense, that is so the magazine appeals to people who enjoy that type of image and music.

The target audience of this magazine would be teenage girls who are quite alternative because they would look up to Oli Sykes and the other bands on this magazine. Also the magazine is usually about concerts and has posters which will appeal to young girls as they can put the pictures up in their bedroom.

The shot type is a long shot so you can see more of his outfit and tattoos which emphasises the fact that this magazine is directed towards a more alternative audience as this would appeal to them.

Research + Planning: Magazine Cover and Contents

This is my magazine cover and contents, I used a bright yellow for the main titles and cover lines as that is a bold colour and will stand out. I also chose to do all of the writing in capitals so it is bold and I made sure that is was all in one consistent font to make it look more neat and professional. The picture I chose was of a student to make it clear right away that this is a college magazine. In the original picture he was also holding books but I had to make sure that it was a medium close up. One this that annoys me about this is the fact that the contents page and the cover aren't the same colour because I made the cover in Photoshop and the contents in InDesign.

Research + Planning: Magazine Questions

1. What kind of things would you like to read about in a college magazine?
2. What is the highest amount you would pay for a college magazine?
3. Do you think there are any issues or improvements I should make to my draft?
4. Are there any colours or shades you would recomend for my magazine?
5.What kind of fonts would you reccomend for my magazine?

From this research I have learnt that I should use bright colours so that it stands out. The font should be bold and large and the news inside should be about the latests clubs and drama.

Research + Planning: College Magazine Draft

Research + Planning: Mid Shots

These are examples of mid shots as I know I need to include one on my college magazine.

Research + Planning: College Magazine Analysis

The target audience is young people 16-18 as it is a college magazines and so is aimed at students. You can tell this because the person on the cover is young and his style is current. In the image he also has some books which relates to college and students. Also, the masthead is 'COLLEGE' and is is written in large font to make it stand out. The cover lines are also quite gossipy and relate to what students would want to read about. The font is also bright to catch the attention of young people.

Research + Planning: College Magazines

What they have in common:

  • Big heading
  • Big image as background
  • Small text saying what's inside
  • Consistent font
  • Bright

How I can tell they're college magazines:

  • Young people on the cover
  • Bright to appeal to young people
  • More 'gossip' like topics
  • Less text on the cover
  • Talks about relationships and studying
