How did you two meet?
“Well, we actually met through a mutual friend called Owen,” says Simon. “I’ve known him as long as I can remember to be honest and we pretty much grew up together, he’s really the one who inspired me to pursue a career in music. At one point we even invited Owen to join the band but he had other opportunities in life which we respect.” “Yeah,” agreed Luna, “I met Owen when I went into high school, he was probably one of the first friends I made there. One day I remember him inviting me over to his house to chill and he must have invited Simon too because that’s where we met, we all bonded over our love for Alternative Rock and our passion for music, since then we’ve been pretty much inseperable.”
What was your inspiration for the bands name?
“Well,” says Simon, “that’s actually quite an entertaining story.” He laughs. “Me and Luna and a group of friends were just having some fun one night and one of my friends began talking about what we would all do in a Zombie Apocalypse and another of my friends must have misheard the conversation as he turned round and just exclaimed ‘Simon and the Catholics’ in confusion, after that it just kind of became a little joke that one day we would create a band named Simon and the Catholics, who would have known that we would now have out own self titled album and be planning a UK and maybe even a world tour?!”
How long have you been playing music?
“I’ve always loved music,” says Luna, “My dad was a bass player in his spare time so I was always brought up listening to artists like Blink-182 and stuff like that. When I was in school I always wanted to be in the band practice room jamming out and listening to my music, however at that time no one really appreciated my music taste. I was never really the kid who you would see at the parties, I would much rather prefer to go to a guitar lesson or just go home a turn my music up as loud as I could, so when me and Simon became friends and I heard of his plans to create a small band I was so excited and couldn’t wait to practice with him.” Luna and Simon nod at each other.
What was your biggest inspiration for your new album?
“Most of the songs on the album are about our friendship, how we met and also issues we faced in out life,” says Luna, in this album we really wanted it to be more personal to us as it was our first proper publically released album, this is the reason we chose to title it after the name of the band.” “The main inspiration for our band,” adds Simon, “is to share our personal stories in order to try and help kids dealing with the issues we used to as when we were growing up we had bands such as Green Day who we could turn on when we were feeling down and instead feel invincible, this is what we want to give to the next generation and just try and bring everyone together.
