Research + Planning: Make-up

A lot of bands choose not to wear extreme makeup in the alternative genre, the most that they would wear is normally the female singers can have quite heavy dark eye makeup and sometimes even the male singers. the main thing about this genre is making everything quite dark. However I could take inspiration from twenty one pilots like Josh Dunn has and put red circles around the eyes. Also I may have to use makeup to create fake tattoos or purchase some fake tattoos as most people associate alternative with tattoos and piercings. It also may be better for me if my model already has some piercings but if not I can use fake ones.

Research + Planning: Costume Research

In most of the images of the bands they are dressed quite dark, this is to fit in with the genre of alternative.
I will take inspiration from this as the dark colours will go with the colour scheme of my magazine; black and red.

Most of the clothes that they're wearing are casual tshirts and probably skinny jeans which will be quite easy for me as that is the kind of clothes I wear anyway.

Research + Planning: Double Page Spread Analysis

Genre
The genre of this magazine is Alternative Rock, this is shown by the dark colours used and also the band on these two pages, MCR, are an alternative band. Also, the clothing and way the band members are represented is quite clearly stereotypical to the genre of Alternative Rock.

Target Audience
The target audience of this magazine is mostly teenagers as that is the classic fan age which are more likely to go out and buy music magazines to be up to date with the latest band gossip. I also think the target audience could possibly be female as they have used mostly males on this double page spread which could potentially be to attract more female readers. However, I don't think it is directed solely at females as the genre is quite dark and so is the magazine which is usually associated more with males.

Layout
On the left hand page it is mostly taken up by a big picture of the lead singer of the band that this page is dedicated to. This is probably used to draw attention as if the reader is flicking through the pages and sees a massive picture of their favourite band they're more likely to read about it. There is predominantly more pictures than text on this page which is probably again as the magazine is targeted towards a teenage audience who would probably rather not read as much. The whole page only consists of 3 colours; red, white and black, this is to keep the page looking consistent. At the top of the right hand page they have a massive quote from the band which catches your attention, this is to give the reader an idea of what the article is about  before they read it. The text underneath is then two neat columns, the title is in a large bold font which also represents the genre and stands out.

Research + Planning: Contents Page Draft

This is my final draft for my contents page. As you can see the main colour scheme is red and black and I am going to have a medium close up of one of my models as a solo artist which will take up the majority of the page and then all of my pages split into sections on the left hand side.

Research + Planning: Questionnaire Results

Research + Planning: Questionnaire Results from rebecca_h

From my results it shows that:
  • There is an equal split between male and female who compleated my questionaire so I can get quite a good set of representitive results
  • Nearly all but one of my answers were from 16 year olds with one 17 year old
  • The most popular genre of music is Indie, followed by Pop Rock, Rap and then the least popular being Alternative, House and Adult Pop. My genre of choice is Alternative meaning my magazine may not be as popular.
  • Most people would rather see a band than a solo artist on the front cover
  • The price range for my magazine should be around £1.50 - £4.50
  • Most people would buy a magazine and even more so if it was cheaper

Research + Planning: Music Magazine Questionnaire

Research + Planning: Contents Page

Genre
The genre of this magazine is alternative rock however I am quite suprised to see the amount of bright colours on the contents page as alternative is usually associated with dark colours however I feel like this makes it more eye catching. The large mid shot of the girl which takes up half of the page shows that it is alternative as she has quite stereotypical fringe/hairstyle which would be associated with this genre of music. Alot of the page is oriented around pop-punk style of music which may also explain the bright colours.

Target Audience
The target audience of this magazine is probably teenage girls who are more likely to buy music magazines. Also the girl on the cover may be to attract more teenage boys to read the magazine. The magazine also has sections such as posters and quizzes which will apeal to the younger teenage audience showing that this is the target audience.

Layout
Most of the page is taken up bu one large midshot with a few other images of the pages inside over it to give the reader a taste of what theyre getting before they even open the magazine. Also the different parts of the magazine have been split off into sections with bold headings and then the different pages with numbers underneath the apropriate catagory. This is to make it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for within the magazine, which is what a good contents page is for.

Representation
On the page is a girl who looks pretty young however I'm not sure if shes from a band or if shes a singer so she I dont really know who she is however it is a medium long shot and she has her arms out, probably just to make the picture look cooler. And then the page also has Green Day who are quite a big band, probably to attract attention, and suprisingly a picture of the editor and some writing from him.
